PGT-A: Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy

At Nandini IVF, our goal is to help you achieve a successful pregnancy. That’s why embryo screening is a crucial part of your fertility consultation.

What is PGT-A?

PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy) screens embryos for chromosome abnormalities—situations where an embryo has an extra or missing chromosome. These changes, often stemming from issues in the egg or sperm, are a primary cause of miscarriage and failed implantation. The risk of such abnormalities increases with maternal age.

Normally, an embryo has 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs (23 from each parent). Deviations from this count significantly reduce the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Why is PGT-A Important?

Even healthy-looking embryos can have chromosomal abnormalities that are undetectable under a microscope. PGT-A helps identify embryos with the correct number of chromosomes, increasing the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.

You might consider PGT-A if you are:

  • Experiencing recurrent miscarriages.
  • Over 35 years old.
  • Have had repeated unsuccessful IVF cycles.

If there’s a family history of specific chromosome conditions, our genetic counseling team will discuss relevant testing options.

How is PGT-A Performed?

Embryos that have developed to Day 5 undergo a biopsy, where a few cells are carefully removed from their outer layer. These cells are sent to the Nandini IVF Genetics laboratory for analysis. Meanwhile, your embryos are frozen and stored.

Analyzing the Cells

The cells are analyzed using next-generation sequencing technology. This process involves:

  1. Amplifying the DNA from the biopsied cells.
  2. Sequencing the DNA fragments.
  3. Comparing the results to the standard human genome to detect any missing or extra chromosomes.

Results are typically available in 2-3 weeks. Your fertility specialist will then discuss which embryos have the highest chance of implantation and a successful pregnancy, allowing you to proceed with a frozen embryo transfer. Viable embryos not used immediately can remain frozen for future use.
