Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction (OI) is a fertility treatment that uses medication to stimulate ovulation. It’s often a significant early step for individuals or couples facing challenges with irregular menstrual cycles, making it difficult to pinpoint the best time to try for a baby.

What is Ovulation?

During each menstrual cycle, an egg is released from your ovaries. This release is called ovulation. While it typically happens around 14 days before your period, the exact timing can vary, usually occurring anywhere from 12 to 18 days before your next period. Understanding your ovulation and fertile window is key to conception.

How Does Ovulation Induction Work?

Ovulation induction is a minimally invasive treatment designed to help you conceive naturally, often preventing the need for more intensive fertility procedures like IVF.

Is Ovulation Induction Right for You?

OI might be an ideal option if you:

  • Have an irregular menstrual cycle.
  • Experience no periods at all (in premenopausal patients).
  • Have healthy fallopian tubes.
  • When experiencing unexplained infertility.

The Ovulation Induction Process

The process of ovulation induction typically involves three main steps:

Step 1

Medication to Stimulate Egg Growth. Your specialist will prescribe medication to encourage a follicle in your ovary to grow and mature an egg.

Monitoring and Timing Your cycle will be closely monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds. This allows your specialist to determine your “fertile window” – the optimal time for you to try to conceive. A trigger injection might be given to ensure ovulation happens at the perfect moment, maximising your chances. During this fertile window, it’s recommended to have sex every two days for the best outcome.

Hormonal Support (If Needed) In some cases, medications may be used during the second half of your cycle (the luteal phase) to boost hormones essential for supporting a potential pregnancy. These might be daily vaginal medications or injections given every few days.

Please note that if an ultrasound is required, it will incur an additional cost. Ultrasounds will only be ordered if indicated by your clinical circumstances.
