Become an Egg Donor

At Nandini IVF, an ART bank and a fully accredited centre, we understand the profound impact egg donation has on individuals and couples dreaming of building a family. If you’re considering becoming an egg donor, our dedicated team of Donor Coordinators is here to guide you through every step, ensuring you make informed decisions that are right for you.

Who Can Become an Egg Donor?

All potential egg donors undergo a comprehensive screening process to determine their eligibility. To qualify as a clinic-recruited donor at Nandini IVF, you generally need to meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Be between 21 and 38 years old. (Exceptions may be considered if you are donating to a known recipient.)
  • Altruism: Your motivation for donating must be purely to help others, not for monetary compensation. However, reasonable and verifiable expenses incurred during the donation process will be reimbursed.
  • Clinical Health: Meet specific health and medical standards determined through a thorough assessment.
  • Genetic Family History: Be able to provide a detailed genetic and family medical history. If you are adopted or for other reasons cannot provide this, you unfortunately cannot be a clinic-recruited donor.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Be a non-smoker (or have ceased smoking for at least three months prior to donation). You should also maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and minimal alcohol consumption.
  • Consent to Information Release: Agree to have your identifying information released to any donor-conceived child upon their request once they turn 18 (or younger, depending on the specific regulations in India). You must also consent to the release of non-identifying general and medical information about you to recipients.
  • Previous Donations: If you’ve donated eggs previously, you must provide details and consent to allow us to contact any clinics where you’ve donated to confirm the details of the families created.

Who Uses Donor Eggs?

Many diverse individuals and couples rely on the generosity of egg donors to start or expand their families. This includes:

  • Solo fathers-to-be using a surrogate.
  • People in same-sex relationships who require donor eggs to have a child.
  • People experience infertility due to factors like ovarian insufficiency, early menopause, or poor egg quality.
  • People affected by genetic conditions they wish to avoid passing on to their children.
  • Transgender or gender-diverse individuals building families through assisted reproduction.

Your selfless act has the power to bring immense happiness and help many people experience the profound joy of family.

Types of Egg Donation

There are two primary pathways for egg donation:

  • Clinic-Recruited Egg Donors: These donors are recruited directly by Nandini IVF. Their identity remains de-identified (unknown) to the recipient at the time of treatment. However, they must consent to providing identifying information that can be shared upon request by a child born from their donation once they reach 18 years of age (or younger in some states/territories of India).
  • Recipient-Recruited (Known) Egg Donors: This involves a donor who has an existing relationship with the recipient(s)—such as a friend, family member, or acquaintance. In these cases, personal details like name and contact information are shared directly between the donor and recipient(s). While the relationship differs, the screening and donation process is largely similar to that for clinic-recruited donors, with minor procedural variations.

Benefits of Being an Egg Donor

Becoming an egg donor is a deeply personal and altruistic decision. Regardless of whether you become a clinic-recruited or recipient-recruited donor, joining our donor program offers significant benefits:

  • Transforming Lives: The most profound benefit is knowing you’ve helped individuals and couples who couldn’t have a baby without donor eggs experience the joy of family. You make a tangible, positive difference in someone else’s life.
  • Making a Positive Impact: Your act of generosity directly contributes to the happiness and fulfillment of others, creating new families and legacies.
  • Personal Health Insights: You’ll receive valuable information about your own fertility and health. This includes the results of comprehensive genetic carrier screening (which identifies if you carry genes for certain inheritable conditions) and other important medical tests, providing insights you might not otherwise obtain.

Information Shared About Egg Donors

For each egg donor, a non-identifying donor profile is created to share information with potential recipients. This profile typically includes details about the donor’s:

  • Medical history
  • Nationality
  • Physical characteristics: Height, build, skin colour, eye colour, and hair colour
  • Occupation
  • Education
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Reason for donating

Under Indian ART laws, a person born from egg donation has the right to obtain identifying information about their donor once they are 18 years old, or younger in some specific circumstances. This information may include the donor’s name, date of birth, and contact information.

The Egg Donation Process

Becoming an egg donor involves several careful steps, designed to ensure your safety and well-being while facilitating a successful donation:

1. Initial Inquiry & Information

Your journey begins with an initial inquiry, where our Donor Coordinators provide comprehensive information about the process, legal aspects, and what to expect.

You’ll complete a detailed application and health questionnaire covering your personal and family medical history, lifestyle, and genetic background.

You’ll have a consultation with our team and undergo mandatory counselling. This session helps you understand the psychological, social, and legal implications of egg donation for yourself and any future donor-conceived children. For known donors, the recipient(s) will also attend counselling.

This crucial step involves:

    • Ovarian Reserve Assessment: Blood tests and ultrasound to assess your egg supply.
    • Infectious Disease Screening: Comprehensive blood and urine tests for conditions like HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Syphilis, and other communicable diseases.
    • Genetic Carrier Screening: Blood tests to identify if you carry genes for common genetic conditions (e.g., Cystic Fibrosis, Thalassemia, Fragile X Syndrome) that could be passed on.

Physical Examination: A general health check.

Once all screening is complete and you are deemed eligible, you will sign detailed consent forms outlining your agreement to donate, the release of information, and the legal aspects of donation under Indian ART regulations.

You will self-administer daily hormone injections for approximately 10-14 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. You’ll have regular monitoring appointments (blood tests and ultrasounds) during this phase.

This is a minor surgical procedure performed under light sedation. A fine needle guided by ultrasound is used to gently retrieve the eggs from your ovaries. The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes.

You will recover at the clinic for a few hours post-retrieval before being discharged. Our team will provide post-procedure care instructions.

A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled to ensure your recovery is progressing well.

The entire egg donation process at Nandini IVF is managed with the utmost care, confidentiality, and strict adherence to all ethical and legal guidelines set forth in India.
