Become a Sperm Donor

At Nandini IVF, an ART bank and a fully accredited centre, everyone deserves the chance to build their dream family. For many, this isn’t possible without the incredible generosity of sperm donors. Your decision to donate can have a profound impact, offering hope and the joy of parenthood to those who need it most.

Who Benefits from Sperm Donation?

A diverse range of individuals and couples rely on sperm donation to start or expand their families. This includes:

  • Solo mothers-to-be: Women who wish to conceive independently.
  • People in same-sex relationships: Couples who require donor sperm to have a child.
  • People experiencing male infertility: Couples where male factor infertility prevents conception.
  • Transgender or gender-diverse individuals: People building families through assisted reproduction.

Your selfless act can bring immense happiness and help many people experience the profound joy of family.

Types of Sperm Donation

There are two primary ways to become a sperm donor at Nandini IVF:

  • Clinic-Recruited Sperm Donors: These donors are recruited directly by Nandini IVF. While their identity remains unknown to the recipient at the time of treatment, they must consent to their identifying information being released to any donor-conceived child upon request, once the child turns 18 (or younger, depending on Indian regulations).
  • Recipient-Recruited (Known) Sperm Donors: This involves a donor who already has an existing relationship with the recipient(s)—such as a friend, family member, or acquaintance. In these cases, personal details like name and contact information are shared between the donor and recipient(s). Although the relationship differs, the screening and donation process largely mirrors that of clinic-recruited donors, with some minor procedural variations.

Who Can Become a Sperm Donor?

All potential sperm donors undergo a comprehensive screening process to ensure their eligibility and the safety of the donation. To qualify as a clinic-recruited sperm donor at Nandini IVF, you’ll need to meet these criteria:

  • Age: Be between 21 and 45 years old.
  • Altruism: Your motivation must be to help others, not for monetary compensation. Reasonable and verifiable expenses associated with your donation will be reimbursed.
  • Clinical Health: Meet specific health and medical standards through a thorough evaluation.
  • Genetic Family History: Be able to provide a detailed genetic and family medical history. If you’re adopted or unable to provide this for other reasons, you unfortunately cannot be a clinic-recruited donor.
  • Healthy Lifestyle: Be a non-smoker, or have quit smoking at least three months prior to donation. You should also maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and minimal alcohol consumption.
  • Consent to Information Release: Agree to have your identifying information released to any donor-conceived child once they reach 18 years of age (or earlier, depending on local regulations in India). You must also consent to the release of non-identifying general and medical information about you to recipients.
  • Previous Donations: If you’ve donated sperm previously, you must provide details, and consent to Nandini IVF contacting those clinics to verify information about families created.

Benefits of Becoming a Sperm Donor

Becoming a sperm donor is a deeply personal and altruistic decision. Regardless of whether you become a clinic-recruited or recipient-recruited donor, joining our program offers significant benefits:

  • Transforming Lives: The most profound benefit is knowing you’ve helped individuals and couples who couldn’t otherwise conceive experience the immense joy of family. You make a tangible, positive difference in someone’s life, creating legacies that wouldn’t exist without your generosity.
  • Personal Health Insights: You’ll receive valuable information about your own fertility and health. This includes the results of a detailed semen analysis, comprehensive genetic carrier screening (for common inheritable conditions), and other important medical tests, providing you with insights you might not otherwise obtain.

Information Shared About Sperm Donors

To assist potential recipients in making an informed choice, a non-identifying donor profile is created for each sperm donor. This profile provides general and medical information, typically including:

  • Medical History
  • Nationality
  • Physical Characteristics: Height, build, skin color, eye color, and hair color
  • Occupation & Education
  • Interests & Hobbies
  • Reason for Donating: Your personal motivation for becoming a donor

The Sperm Donation Process

Becoming a sperm donor involves a careful, multi-step process designed to ensure the safety and well-being of both the donor and the future child, adhering strictly to Indian ART regulations:

1. Initial Inquiry & Information

Your journey begins with an initial inquiry, where we provide you with detailed information about the donation process, legal implications, and what to expect.

You’ll complete a comprehensive application and health questionnaire, covering your medical history, lifestyle, and genetic background.

You’ll have a consultation with our team and undergo mandatory counselling. This session helps you understand the psychological, social, and legal aspects of sperm donation, including implications for any future donor-conceived children. For recipient-recruited donors, the recipient(s) will also attend counselling.

This is a crucial step involving:

    • Semen Analysis: To assess your sperm quality (count, motility, morphology).
    • Infectious Disease Screening: Comprehensive blood and urine tests for conditions like HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Syphilis, and others, ensuring no transmissible diseases.
    • Genetic Carrier Screening: Blood tests to screen for common genetic conditions that could be passed on to a child, such as Cystic Fibrosis, Fragile X Syndrome, and Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This is especially important if you cannot provide a full family genetic history.
    • Physical Examination: A general health check by our medical team.

Once all screening is complete and you are deemed eligible, you will sign detailed consent forms outlining your agreement to donate, the release of information, and the legal aspects of donation under Indian law.

You will provide multiple sperm samples at our clinic over a period. These samples are then frozen and quarantined for a period (typically six months).

After the quarantine period, you will undergo repeat infectious disease screening to ensure no infections were present but undetectable during the initial screening window.

Once all tests are cleared, and consent forms are finalized, your sperm samples are approved for use.

Your non-identifying profile is then made available to potential recipients through our ART bank.

The entire process at Nandini IVF is managed with the utmost care, confidentiality, and strict adherence to all ethical and legal guidelines set forth in India.
